Q. Can you mail me a brochure?
A.
Yes, but there is a lot more information here on our website than
there is in our paper brochure.
Q. Are you close to all the area attractions?
A.
Yes. Most of the local area attractions are within a 10 to 20 minute drive from
the Timber Lodge. The attractions that are the furthest away (Cripple Creek, The
Royal Gorge and river rafting) are about a 1 hour drive from the Timber Lodge.
Q. Are your cabins clean?
A.
Yes. Our team of housekeepers use an extensive checklist to prepare your cabin
before your arrival and to maintain your cabin during your stay. Daily
housekeeping includes making the beds, vacuuming, emptying trash cans,
restocking soap, towels and toilet paper. Rarely do problems arise. If you have
a concern, let us know and we will fix it immediately.
Q. Are your cabins "nice"?
A.
Yes. Our cabins have a rustic log sided exterior and are clean and comfortable
on the inside. We don't claim that our cabins are fancy or luxurious. The cabins
were built in the late 1930's, 40's and 50's. We are constantly upgrading the
carpets, bedspreads, linens, pillows, dishes, etc.
Q. Do you have a pool or a hot tub?
A.
We have a heated pool (around 82 degrees) that is available from 9:30 am to 8:30
pm. The pool is 20 ft. by 40 ft. and has a depth from 3 ft. to 9 ft. We
provide clean pool towels in the pool area. For safety reasons there is no
diving board or water slide. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by a
responsible adult in the pool area. We do no have a hot tub, Jacuzzi or steam
room. The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Q. Do your cabins have air conditioning?
A.
We use cooling units that are called evaporative coolers (or water coolers).
These units work very well in low humidity areas like Colorado. Our average
summer humidity is around 20 to 25%. This type of "air conditioning" is very
environmentally friendly and yes, they really cool down the cabins very well. In
fact, the hotter it is outside, the better they work at cooling.
Q. Do you have any "non-smoking" cabins?
A. All cabins are "non-smoking." On July 1,
2006, the State of Colorado passed strict anti-smoking laws that no longer
allowed smoking inside restaurants, bars and public buildings. The new law
requires lodging properties to designate 75% of their rooms/cabins as
non-smoking. Because of the many configurations of cabins at the Timber
Lodge, we are unable to designate 25% of our cabins as non-smoking.
Although smoking is prohibited inside the cabins, smoking is still allowed on
decks, porches, and outdoor common areas. If we detect smoke odor in a
cabin, we use a $500 ozinator machine to eliminate the odor.
Q. Can we check in early or have a late check
out? Late arrival?
A.
Generally our check in time is any time after 2:00 pm. If you are in the area
any time after 1:00 pm, please stop by and check if your cabin is ready. If the
housekeepers have completed the cleaning of your cabin, we'll get you in right
away. If it is not ready early then it will definitely be ready by 2:00 pm. It
is not possible to store your suitcases, etc., in your cabin before it has been
fully cleaned as it really slows down the housekeepers. Check out time is
usually by 10:00 am but we can stretch it by an hour until 11:00 am if you let
us know by around 9:00 am. Our office is open from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm. If you
know that you will be arriving after 8:00 pm, please give us a call and we will
make easy arrangements for a late check in. If you arrive after 8:00 pm, there
will be an envelope with your name on it pinned to the bulletin board right next
to the office door. In the envelope will be a map of the property indicating the
location of your cabin and 2 keys (the same arrangement for an arranged late
check in). Please sign in at the office in the morning before heading out to
visit the local attractions. The owners of the Timber Lodge live in the house
that adjoins the office. In case of urgent business after hours, please ring the
buzzer next to the office door and we will gladly help you.
Q. Do you allow pets?
A. Sorry, no. As much as we love animals, we don't let them in the
cabins or allow them to stay or sleep in vehicles or be tied up anywhere on the
property.
Q. How big is your stream and can you fish in it?
A. The stream (Fountain Creek) runs the length of the property and
generally runs 15 to 20 feet wide and 1 to 2 feet deep and has a gentle flow
(except after a heavy rain storm). Children can play in and around the creek
only if there is a responsible and attentive adult with them. Tennis shoes or
water socks should be worn if playing in the creek. There are very few fish in
this section of the creek. The closest good fishing is around one hour away.
There is a full sporting good/fishing gear department 1/2 mile away at Long's
Drug store. They also sell fishing licenses.
Q. How big (or small) are your A-Frame cabins?
A. On our brochure and website we list our A-Frame cabins as "small,
very small and tiny". We tell people that these cabins are for two people that
like each other a lot as there is very little room to move around. They have a
bed, two chairs, a small table, a dresser, television, small fridge, microwave,
and a small bathroom with a shower (no tub). The A-Frames are about 1/3 to 1/2
the size of a standard size motel room. Most people like them because they are
cute and charming but if you need more space, we suggest one of our larger
cabins for two people such as cabins #19, 20, 21, 22, 24, or 25.
Q. Tell me about your "Deluxe Cabins".
A. We don't have "Deluxe Cabins". People often misread "Duplex
Cabins" as "Deluxe Cabins". Duplex means there is one building containing two
units. These cabins share a long porch but have separate entrance doors.
Q. Can we sleep extra people on the floor in sleeping bags?
A. No. Our cabins are designed and furnished for either 2, 4 or 6
people and we have found that trying to put too many people in individual cabins
does not make for a comfortable stay. There are a few exceptions where we can
put in a floor mattress for a child (we provide the linens, blanket and pillow)
or a crib (actually a Pack N' Play). Some cabins will comfortably fit a floor
mattress or a crib and some won't. We do not have roll-a-way beds.
Q. Can we set up a tent for extra people or let them sleep in an RV or in the
van?
A. No. There is a campground (Garden of the Gods Campground) right
across the street from the Timber Lodge that is set up for camping and RV's.
Q. Do we need to bring linens and kitchen utensils?
A. We provide all linens, blankets, pillows and towels. We also
re-stock the soap, towels and toilet paper every day. Our full kitchen and
kitchenette cabins are stocked with pots, pans, dishes, coffee maker, toaster,
all necessary utensils (cutting boards, potato peeler, colander, mixing bowls,
measuring cup etc.) dish soap and dish towels.
Q. What is the difference between a "full kitchen" and a "kitchenette"?
A. Full kitchen cabins (#14 and #18) have a 4 burner electric stove
with an oven and a regular size fridge. A kitchenette cabin has a 2 burner
electric stove, sink and a 4 cubic ft. fridge. All cabins have microwave ovens.
Q. Do the cabins that have "fridge and microwave only" also have all the kitchen
utensils, pots, dishes, etc.?
A. No.
Q. Do you sell food, drinks, candy, souvenirs, etc. at the Timber Lodge?
A. No.
Q. Is there a grocery store close by?
A. Yes. There is a Safeway grocery store (open 24 hours) about a half
mile away. There are other grocery stores (including a Wal-Mart SuperCenter)
within about a 10 minute drive.
Q. Are there any restaurants close by?
A. You can find every type of restaurant from fast food to fancy and
everything in between within one or two miles from the Timber Lodge. Located
directly in front of the Timber Lodge is "Amanda's Fonda" (one of this areas'
best Mexican restaurants) which is open for lunch and dinner and has indoor and
creek side patio dining.
Q. Are there any large shopping malls close by?
A. There are 2 major malls in the Colorado Springs area. The Citadel
Mall (about 15 to 20 minutes away) and the Chapel Hills Mall (near the Air Force
Academy, about 25 to 30 minutes away).
Q. Are there any movie theatre close by?
A. The closest movie theatres are about 15 to 20 minutes away. We
provide (in our office) a complete current listing of which movies are playing
in the local theatres.
Q. Are there any shopping areas close by? Any within walking distance?
A. Old Colorado City is one mile east of us and downtown Manitou
Springs is about a mile and a half west of us. Each of these areas have close to
100 small shops and restaurants. We don't really consider these shopping areas
within walking distance of the Timber Lodge.
Q. Can you make reservations for us at the local attractions?
A. We strongly recommend that you make reservations for the Flying W
Ranch, the Cog Railway, horseback riding, and river rafting several weeks or
months before your arrival. Some of these attractions require a credit card # to
guarantee their reservations and we are not comfortable giving out your credit
card #. The website
www.pikes-peak.com has links to all the major attractions in the area.
Q. Are there any hiking and bicycling trails close by?
A. Yes. The Garden of the Gods, a 1200 acre park is about a 10 minute
walk or a 5 to 10 minute drive from the Timber Lodge.
Q. Are there golf courses close by?
A. The closest golf courses are about a 15 to 20 minute drive from
the Timber Lodge. We have a list of all area courses posted in our office.
Q. What TV channels do you get?
A. We receive about 70 cable channels including all the major 24 hour
news networks, ESPN, the Weather channel, the Cartoon channel, etc.
Q. Do any cabins have a view of Pikes Peak?
A. Pikes Peak is close by. The entrance to the Pikes Peak Highway is
about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Timber Lodge and the Cog Railway Depot is
about 2 miles away. The Peak can be seen from certain areas of the property but
all of the 50+ foot tall trees tend to block the view from the cabins.
Q. If you are already "booked up" can you recommend another cabin property?
A. If you go to
www.pikes-peak.com or
www.manitousprings.org
and click on "accommodations" you will find listings and some links to most of
the hotels, motels, bed and breakfast, cabins and cottage properties in the
area.
Our business office is open 7 days a week all
year long for reservations
and information, however, all of our cabins are closed from October 8, 2007
through April 24, 2008.
The Timber Lodge is open from April 25, 2008 through October 5, 2008.
